The Pulp and Paper industry requires bearings that can withstand the high demands such as moisture, intense heat, shaft deflections, high speeds and long lifetimes. Only bearings that are extremely reliable can achieve the best paper quality. To understand the type of bearings required, let’s understand the papermaking machinery first.
Papermaking machines have three main areas:
- A wet end section that pulls the bulk of water and moisture out of the pulp
- A dry section that removes the moisture
- A finishing section that ensures a standard smoothness, thickness and glossiness of the paper
The conversion of wet pulp into dry paper relies on three sections working together. These three sections rely on bearings to keep rolls, gears, motors and other equipment functioning effectively. All paper industry bearings are manufactured to work towards a long life, an excellent speed and quality bearing materials that can withstand high temperature.
Types of Bearings in the Papermaking Industry
Paper Industry bearings come in four types: spherical roller, tapered roller, cylindrical roller and ball bearing.
Spherical Roller Bearing
Spherical Roller Bearings are the most commonly used bearings in the papermaking industry. Therefore, they are critical to the success of the three main sections. In the wet section they are used in forming rolls, suction rolls, center press rolls and anti-deflection rolls. In the dry section, both the guide rolls and dry rolls use them. Lastly the calendar rolls of the finishing section use spherical roller bearings.
Tapered Roller Bearing
Spherical Roller Bearings are the most commonly used bearings in the papermaking industry. Therefore, they are critical to the success of the three main sections. Cylindrical Roller Bearings
Tapered Roller Bearings are often used for secondary processes such as pumps, gears and pulpers. These bearings are made from chrome steel and function well at high temperature and speeds. They support axial, radial and combination loads.
Ball Bearings
Ball Bearings come in two types - Deep Groove and Angular Contact. Both bearings tend to be used in secondary equipment like gears, pulpers and winders. However, the deep groove ball bearings are often used in spreader rolls of the finishing section. They are made of chrome steel and can accommodate radial, axial and combination loads at various speeds.
